The grip areas are approximately 2 inches in diameter. This is fat enough to work your forearms and grip hard, but not so fat as to limit the weight you can handle in the various movements. So you won't compromise your back workout for the sake of getting some grip work in. It provides just the right balance.
Each of the five hand positions/orientations available are designed to hit an area of your back with devastating efficiency. For example, row using the wide, straight grip to blast your upper back and rear deltoids. Then switch to the angled, close grip to reach deep into your lower lats. And everything in between.
